Online Expert Witness Training
Not every animal professional can travel to a capital city for training. Our online expert witness program delivers the same rigorous curriculum as our face-to-face workshops, with the flexibility to learn from your practice, farm, or home — anywhere in Australia with an internet connection.
Two Online Formats
| Feature | Self-Paced Course | Live Online Workshop |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Pre-recorded video modules + written exercises | Live Zoom sessions over 2 half-days |
| Duration | 8–10 hours at your own pace (60-day access) | 2 x 4-hour sessions (usually consecutive days) |
| Interaction | Written feedback on submitted report | Live Q&A, mock cross-examination, group discussion |
| Mock Cross-Exam | Video examples only | Live mock with a practising barrister |
| Best For | Rural/remote professionals, flexible schedules | Those wanting interactive learning with feedback |
| Certificate | On completion of all modules + assessment | On attendance of both sessions |
Curriculum
Both formats cover the same core content:
- Module 1 — The Expert's Role: Legal framework, duty to the court, independence, conflicts of interest, Expert Witness Code of Conduct
- Module 2 — Report Writing: Structure, methodology disclosure, expressing opinion vs fact, dealing with competing hypotheses, common errors that damage credibility
- Module 3 — Oral Evidence: Examination-in-chief, surviving cross-examination, answering "yes or no" questions, using visual aids, managing nerves
- Module 4 — Concurrent Evidence: Hot-tubbing procedures, joint expert reports, areas of agreement and disagreement
- Module 5 — Practical Application: Case studies from real animal-related proceedings, drafting a sample report, peer review exercise
- Module 6 — Building Your Practice: Finding instructions, fee setting, professional development, insurance requirements
Ideal for Regional and Rural Professionals
Many of Australia's animal experts work outside capital cities — large animal vets, livestock consultants, equine professionals, and council officers in regional areas. Online training removes the travel barrier while maintaining the quality of instruction. Our rural participants regularly tell us that the content is directly applicable to the matters they encounter — stock disputes, dangerous dog cases in small communities, and livestock welfare prosecutions.
Technical Requirements
- Stable internet connection (minimum 5 Mbps for live sessions)
- Computer with webcam and microphone (for live workshop participation)
- Zoom installed (live workshop) or modern web browser (self-paced)
- Quiet space for mock cross-examination exercises
