Expert Witness Training in Brisbane

Queensland's Animal Management Act 2008 and Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 create a distinct legal framework for animal-related disputes. Our Brisbane training programs prepare veterinarians, animal behaviourists, and council officers to give expert evidence that meets the specific requirements of Queensland courts and QCAT.

Queensland's Unique Legal Landscape

Queensland handles animal matters differently from other states in several important ways:

  • Regulated dogs framework: QLD uses "regulated dogs" (declared dangerous or menacing) under the Animal Management Act, with specific conditions and appeal pathways to QCAT
  • Biosecurity Act 2014: Covers livestock disease, movement restrictions, and biosecurity emergencies — experts may be called on livestock matters unique to QLD
  • Racing Integrity Commission: Queensland's independent racing integrity body creates demand for equine and greyhound expert evidence
  • QCAT procedures: QCAT has its own expert evidence practice direction that differs from courts — understanding these requirements is essential

Brisbane Training Program

Our two-day intensive workshop covers:

  • Day 1 — Foundations: Expert witness duties under Queensland law, the QCAT expert evidence practice direction, report writing to court standards, and managing conflicts of interest
  • Day 2 — Courtroom skills: Mock cross-examination with a Queensland barrister, oral evidence techniques, concurrent evidence procedures, and dealing with unexpected questions
  • Queensland-specific case studies from QCAT, Magistrates Court, and District Court
  • Template report structures compliant with UCPR and QCAT requirements
  • Small group format with individual feedback on a sample report you prepare between days
