Animal Expert Witness Fees & Costs
Understanding expert witness costs upfront helps you budget for your case and avoid surprises. Our fees are transparent and discussed before any work begins. We provide a written fee estimate for every engagement, and we do not commence work without your approval of the scope and cost.
What Drives the Cost?
Expert witness fees vary depending on the complexity of the matter, the type of expert required, and whether court attendance is needed. The main cost components are:
- Initial consultation: We offer a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to understand your matter and determine whether we can assist. There is no charge for this initial discussion
- Document review: Reviewing the brief of evidence, veterinary records, council reports, witness statements, and other material provided by the instructing party
- Site visit or animal assessment: Where a physical inspection or behavioural assessment is required, this includes travel time, the assessment itself, and any follow-up observations
- Report preparation: Writing the expert report, including research, analysis, and formatting to court requirements
- Court attendance: If the expert is required to give oral evidence, this is charged separately and includes preparation, travel, waiting time, and time in the witness box
Typical Fee Ranges
While every matter is different, the following ranges give a general indication. We always provide a specific estimate before commencing work:
| Service | Typical Range (inc GST) | What's Included |
|---|---|---|

| Assessment + report (behavioural) | $2,500 – $5,000 | Site visit, behavioural testing, document review, full report |
| Assessment + report (veterinary/clinical) | $2,000 – $4,500 | Clinical examination, record review, opinion on standard of care |
| Valuation report (horses, breeding stock) | $2,000 – $6,000 | Inspection, market analysis, pedigree review, valuation opinion |
| Court attendance (half day) | $1,500 – $2,500 | Preparation, travel, waiting, giving evidence |
| Court attendance (full day) | $2,500 – $4,500 | As above, full day allocation |
| Joint expert conference | $1,000 – $2,000 | Preparation, conference, joint report |
All fees are indicative only. Regional travel, complex multi-animal matters, and expedited timelines may attract additional charges. GST applies to all fees.
Payment Terms
- Payment is due within 14 days of invoice
- For new clients, a 50% deposit is required before work commences

Who Pays for the Expert?
The party who engages the expert pays the fees. However:
- Costs orders: If you win your case, the court may order the other party to pay your expert witness fees as part of a costs order
- Court-appointed experts: In some cases, the court appoints a single joint expert, with costs shared between the parties
- Insurance: If the matter is insured (home and contents, public liability), the insurer often covers expert witness fees
- Legal aid: Some Legal Aid commissions fund expert reports in criminal animal cruelty matters

- Whether a physical assessment or site visit is required
- The volume of documents to be reviewed
- Whether court attendance is likely
